Little terns threatened by industrial park
Taichung Power Station, located at the south end of Taichung Port, is one of the largest coal-fired power plants in the world. With the development of the industrial zone, the nearby Little Tern habitat is disappearing gradually. The goal of this project is thus to design a special shelter in the station serving as Little Tern habitat.
A place to call home
The habitat total area is approximately 8,700 sqm, including a warehouse roof and trapezoidal grassland. Key issues of this project include vegetation design, design to prevent flooding and predator problems and bird-luring and nestling shelter facilities design. Using non-woven fabrics, pebbles and oyster shells on the ground, installing electronic fences and placing fake birds and loudspeakers will improve habitat utilization and Little Tern’s reproduction rate. This artificial habitat will serve as an environmental education example, providing experiences for other environmental protection projects in Taiwan.
