Transforming the Thai railway network into a double track system

The current railway network of Thailand comprises 4,044 km of single line track and 143 km and 107 km of double track and triple track, respectively. The current network is quickly reaching its maximum capacity and due to the growing demand, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has decided to add additional tracks to the network. The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) under the Ministry of Transport has therefore conducted a Phase I planning work for the extension of the double track system and a review and improvement of the transport and logistics management for Thailand’s railway network.

The Phase I study included the following works:

  • Doubling of 400 km rail track
  • Upgrade of 80 stations
  • Upgrade for signaling and telecommunication
  • Upgrade of 500 road crossings
  • New ICD and 8 new container yards
