Bridging the Laonong River Valley

MAA was commissioned in 2002 by Taiwan’s National Expressway Engineering Bureau to design a bridge connecting National Expressways No. 27 & 28 at Dajin Village and Shinwei Village in the Maolin National Scenic Area, Kaohsiung County, a long and narrow scenic area encompassing several Purple Butterfly valleys, where every winter as many as 600,000 Euploea butterflies gather.

To reflect these famous “Purple Butterfly Valleys” in the Maolin National Scenic Area, MAA specifically designed the bridge as a double-arch bridge (with a span of 145 m) alluding to the shape of the Euploea purple butterfly. The total length of the two-way link is 2,320 m long, with a 1,735 m long bridge section. An additional passageway was designed for walking and bicycles.
