A growing urban area in the Northern Taiwan metropolitan region
The Jhongli-Taoyuan urban district authorities in Northern Taiwan asked SURV, MAA’s associate architecture and planning firm, to lay out a 20 years vision plan for its urban development. One of the challenges for this industrial region is to define itself between the service-oriented Taipei urban area and the Hsinchu biotech cluster, and to take advantage of the proximity of Taoyuan International Airport and of Taipei and New Taipei City workers attracted by available land and lower living costs.
Setting up a strategic vision for Taoyuan and Jhongli
SURV advocated a strategy reinforcing the existing transportation network between Taoyuan and Taipei and new sustainable urban development strategies, in order for Taoyuan and Jhongli to become important urban centers integrated to the Greater Taipei area and taking full advantage of international flows of goods and persons from Taoyuan International Airport. This vision is currently being implemented with the new Taoyuan MRT network connecting Taoyuan, Taipei and the Taoyuan Airport HSR station, and with ambitious plans for a Taoyuan aerotropolis.
