Connecting Southeast Taipei with the new Xinyi Commercial District

The 3.2 km Xinyi Expressway, a crucial route that connects the crowded Taipei eastern districts with the Wanfang interchange area, opened to traffic on May 14, 2005.

The expressway is a major linkage between many commercial and residential areas, including the Taipei Xinyi district, Wenshan, Muzha and Shenkeng areas. The linkage not only brings in more people into the Xinyi Commercial District where Taipei 101, shopping malls and World Trade Exhibition Halls are located, but also creates new economic development opportunities for other connected areas. At the same time, the opening of the expressway alleviates the heavy traffic loading on the Northern Taiwan Second Freeway to the Taipei Connection Route and Keelung Road.

The Expressway includes:

1. the 1400 m long twin bored Wenshan tunnel,

2. a 105 m long elevated connecting overpass,

3. the 990 m long Xiangshan tunnel, and

4. Southern and Northern access ramps.

Scope of work

MAA provided design services for the whole project, including the two tunnels, road and overpass, drainage and water and soil conservation, landscaping, an additional road underpass and passenger tunnel, tunnels lighting, firefighting and ventilation equipment.
