A new park dedicated to high-tech industries in Southern Taiwan
The 570 ha Luzhu Science Park, now known as Kaohsiung Science Park, is located between Luzhu, Gangshan and Yongan Townships of Kaohsiung County. The park is home to many hi-tech firms, with up to 50,000 people working in the area.
A new interchange with Highway No. 1
To reduce traffic time, lower transportation cost and strengthen traffic efficiency, the government decided to build a new interchange that combines the existing Luzhu and Gangshan interchanges on National Highway No.1 with access roads to the Luzhu Science Park. The project includes building a new four-leaf clover interchange built, widening the highway, building new access roads, ramps and ring roads, and designing the surrounding landscape. The project will complete the local traffic network, increase the capacity to meet traffic needs up to 2027, reduce traffic jams, connect transportation flows of all major townships and Luzhu Science Park, increase local recreational activities and provide sufficient drainage and flood control systems.
Innovative construction methods
During construction, several innovative methods were used to reduce cost, increase quality and meet the existing flood problem and traffic diversion challenges. Specifically, the Prefabricated Vertical Drains and Preloading methods were used to reduce future settlement; existing semi-pool fish farms were collectively rented to reduce the land acquisition costs; excavated soil from piling was reused as backfill for embankments to reduce soil-outsourcing costs; farms, ecological friendly farm roads and flood prevention pools were relocated to the inside of interchanges areas to achieve flood prevention measures and enhance landscape aesthetics.
