Connecting Bangkok with Chonburi
The new highway is built to connect the cities of Bangkok and Chonburi. The construction includes a 4 lanes divided highway, interchanges and overpasses. A major part of the 80 km new highway passes through low lying land with thick layers of extremely soft deposits.
Soft soil improvement
Soil improvement is required for about 60 km of the route to accelerate consolidation settlement and to reduce the residual settlement under embankments to within specified tolerances. The soil improvement method adopted for the project was the surcharge preloading technique with the installation of Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD). PVDs were installed to a depth of 8 m to 12 m below the existing ground with a cumulated amount of 22,665,600 m.
